Signs and symptoms begin gradually, worsen over time and then resolve, usually within a two-year period. No one really understands why some people develop a frozen shoulder. For some reason, the shoulder joint becomes stiff and scarred. Frozen shoulder without any known cause starts with pain. This pain prevents you from moving your arm. The lack of movement leads to stiffness and then even less motion. Over time, you become unable to perform activities such as reaching over your head or behind you.

Treatment: Pain is treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and steroid injections. Steroid injections plus physical therapy can improve your motion.

If nothing is done, the condition should get better by itself within 2 years with little loss of motion. Any risk factors for frozen shoulder, such as diabetes or thyroid problems should also be treated.

Acupressure therapy says that 'Excessive coldness in the lungs is the main reason for frozen shoulder.'

Acupressure for frozen shoulder starts with reducing the pain and stiffness of the shoulder and increasing blood circulation through heat. .

Acupressure points to get relief from frozen shoulder:

Generally it is best to use the point on the opposite side of the body from the frozen shoulder.  'edshealth tips' suggests TH3, ST38 and GB39.

TH3 is on the back of the hand, between the last two bones of the hand, just above the fingers. This point is used to relief neck pain. Stimulation of this acupressure point on the back of the hand may provide relief for neck and shoulder pain. The acupressure point, when stimulated, may release endorphins (chemicals) in the brain which have a pain relief effect similar to morphine. Press the point lightly and progress to more pressure slowly until you feel a dull ache or distending sensation around or spreading out from the point. Press and hold the point until the neck pain lessens and you feel the muscles relax.

Note: If the pain is on the left side of the neck, use the right hand acupressure point. Similarly, if the pain is on the right side of the neck, use the left hand acupressure point.

It is also thought that stimulating the acupressure point for neck pain can block pain impulses from the spinal cord to the brain. Research has indicated that acupressure points have a lower resistance to electrical current and stimulating these points may modulate electrical activity.

ST38 is on the shin, just outside of the crest of the shin bone, half way between the knee cap and the ankle. Very effective distal point for disorders of the shoulder. For limited range of motion of the shoulder joint: apply strong reducing needling techniques while the patient moves their shoulder joint.

GB39 is one hands width above the outer ankle bone, just in front of the leg bone that runs down to the ankle. Hui-meeting point of the Marrow. Important distal point for disorders of the cervical spine. Press or massage each of these points for about one minute, two or three times a day. Do it immediately before massaging liniment into the shoulder.

'Head First Yoga' has suggested more points which can also be added as an effective relief from the ailment. You may try the points which seem more tender than others. They didn't added pictures with the acupressure points but you can consult an acupressure expert to get advice or location of the points.
