Herbal extract of two amazing herbs can help you manage arthritis pain. In a recent study presented at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis in San Diego, a combination remedy of two herbal extracts (Turmeric root and Boswellia) demonstrated superior efficacy compared with the prescription drug for relieving osteoarthritis pain of the knee. Both amazing herbs turmeric root and Boswellia have long histories of traditional use for the treatment of arthritis pain.

The major suffering associated with arthritis is joint pain. Arthritis causes painful inflammation (swelling) of the joints. Arthritis over time damages joint tissue, causing additional pain. Arthritis leads to a feeling of fatigue, which makes pain feel worse and more difficult to manage. Arthritis can lead to symptoms of stress or depression, making you focuses more on pain and lament not being able to do the things you once enjoyed.

Symptoms of arthritis include pain and limited function of joints. Inflammation of the joints from arthritis is characterized by joint stiffness, swelling, redness, and warmth. Tenderness of the inflamed joint can be present. Painful swelling, inflammation, and stiffness in the fingers, arms, legs, and wrists occurring in the same joints on both sides of the body, especially upon awakening, may be signs of rheumatoid arthritis.

Health benefits of Turmeric root and Boswellia:

Turmeric root (Curcuma longa):

Turmeric is a common tuberous brightly yellow color vegetable spice used all over the world.  It stimulates gastric juices, and it is used in Indian households in most vegetable dishes as an anti-food poisoning agent that also reduces mucous formation.

Sanskrit: Haridra

Chinese: Jiang huang / Yu Jin

Turmeric is may be the best medicine according to ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda. Practitioners in this tradition believe it cures the whole person, without creating imbalances. It is also recommended to ingest a small amount of turmeric everyday to help give your skin a healthy glow.

Western science confirms that turmeric is a first rate anti-inflammatory herb. It contains at least two chemicals, curcumin and curcuminoids, that act to decrease inflammation much like NSAID COX-2 that inhibit the production of prostaglandins which are linked to arthritic inflammation. This anti-inflammatory effect may be why consumption of turmeric is also connected to a reduced occurrence of cancers, cataracts and Alzhemimers, and has been shown to be an effective pain reliever in cases of rheumatoid arthritis.  Modern studies confirm ancient wisdom that those with psoriasis can especially benefit from daily turmeric. Studies show that the curcumin in turmeric acts to disrupt the cycle of skin plaque formation, working in a similar manner to the new biologic TNF inhibitors.

Boswellia serrata:

Boswellia is an Ayurvedic plant that contains anti-inflammatory triterpenoids called boswellic acids. It is Indian frankincense or Salai. It is found in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Andhara Pradesh in India.

In Ayurvedic medicine Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) has been used for hundreds of years for treating arthritis. Extracts of Boswellia serrata have been clinically studied for osteoarthritis and joint function, particularly for osteoarthritis of the knee. Positive effects of Boswellia in some chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been reported.

Boswellic acid and its derivatives have anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor, and blood lipid lowering activities. Dried extracts of the resin of the boswellia Serrata tree have been used since antiquity in India to treat inflammatory conditions. Boswellia Serrata Gum Resin is widely used in Ayurvedic formulations for treating Asthma and Arthritis.

  • Recent reports show that Boswelia serrata can be useful in joint pain and back pain and can even help in cases where steroids are needed by offsetting some of the symptoms of the problems and therefore helping the patient to use a lower steroid dose.
  • The essential oil of Boswellia searrata was found to he anti-fungal. Anti-inflammatory activity and anti-bacterial activity of extracts have been demonstrated.

Combination of these two herbal extracts is called Rhulief (trade mark name). The Rhulief product contains an extract of turmeric root (Curcuma longa) called BCM-95, and an extract of boswellia (Boswellia serrata) called BosPure.

Other alternative therapies to treat arthritis pain:

  • Try heat and cold therapy. Using heat and cold treatments can reduce the pain and stiffness of arthritis.
  • Massage. Massage brings warmth and relaxation to the painful area.
  • Practice relaxation. Relaxation can give you a sense of control and well-being that makes it easier to manage pain. Meditation can be a way of relaxation. Deep breathing is also helpful.
  • Surgery. When other treatment methods don't lessen the pain, or when you have major difficulty moving and using your joints, surgery may be necessary.
