According to Health Encyclopedia – Diseases and Conditions arthritis is “a disease that causes pain and loss of movement of the joints.” The word “arthritis” literally means inflammation of the joint (arth – joint and itis – inflammation). “Arthritis” is the umbrella term that includes more than a hundred arthritic diseases, the most popular of which are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout and psoriatic arthritis.

Studies have shown that patients with rheumatoid arthritis can reduce swelling significantly by adding omega 3 fatty acids to the diet.
A study entitled Dietary omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and naproxen treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis states that the duration of morning stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis is significantly less in a study group with dietary omega 3 fatty acid supplementation.
Salmon is also a rich source of calcium, vitamin D and folate. Vitamin C, important in the production of collagen, helps slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.
Fight Arthritis with Sweet Peppers
Sweet peppers are super sources of vitamin C, which, because it is a precursor to the body’s manufacture of collagen, is crucial in the fight against osteoarthritis. Vitamin C also fights the effects of free radicals, which are generated by inflammatory compounds. These free radicals ultimately cause tissue damage in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
A single green pepper alone already packs 176 percent of our daily needs for vitamin C. Red and yellow varieties have more than double that amount. Sweet peppers are also rich in vitamin B6 and folate, both nutrients arthritis fighters.
Shrimps help Fight Arthritis
Shrimps are sources of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin C, which are nutrients that fight arthritis, especially effective against osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Shrimps are also rich in vitamin D, iron and vitamin B12.
In an article entitled Foods that Fight Arthritis, Factoidz staff writer Amanda Bradbury writes that low levels of the mineral selenium has been linked to the severity of osteoarthritis. She lists shrimp as among the foods rich in selenium.
The fight against arthritis starts in the prevention process. Diet, especially in our day and age, is one of the prime tools against many diseases, including arthritis. Why wait for the development of arthritis?
